Rhabdomyolysis

This is a condition where there is a rapid breakdown of muscle tissue leading to a large release of myoglobin into the bloodstream. The myoglobin is a cousing to hemoglobin, but it resides in the muscles to grab oxygen for the muscle tissues. It has a larger structure than hemoglobin and can cause clogging of the kidneys during hemofiltration. This is important because if the muscle tissue breakdown is massive enough, the kidneys can become irreversibly damaged, sometimes even leading to kidney failure thus necessitating hemodialysis to sustain life. There are multiple causes of rhabdomyolysis, and it is one of the most severe adverse reactions that can occur from taking cholesterol lowing statin medications.
