Bio Equivalent Hormones-What are they?

Bio Equivalent Hormones, sometimes referred to as Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHRT) is not to be confused with traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that has received much negative press since the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study was halted. The WHI study utilized commercial conjugated estrogens derived from the urine of pregnant horses, and Medroxyprogesterone (also known as progestins). Abruptly stopped in 2002, the WHI concluded that HRT increases a woman's risk for breast cancer and stroke. It is important to reiterate that the WHI was based on the use of commercial hormones that are foreign in structure to a woman's natural hormones. While in use for years, commercial/pharmaceutical hormones may have helped with menopausal symptoms because they can occupy hormone receptors in the female body. However, the body's ability to metabolize these hormones remains in question. The WHI study concluded that estrogen replacement therapy results in a slight increase in the chance of breast cancer, stroke, and uterine cancer.

Forms of Bio-identical hormone administration.

Bio Equivalent Hormones are hormones derived from plants and structurally manipulated in a laboratory until they are structurally similar to what your body produced for years. More importantly since Bio-identical hormones are prescribed from compounding pharmacies, the dosage can be customized to meet an individuals optimal dose. An individual's hormone pathways are similar to their finger print, unique to them. On the other hand traditional commercial/pharmaceutical hormones come with fewer dosage choices.

Through the 20th century, medical technology has helped increase life expectancy for men and woman alike. What hasn't kept up is our ability to do more than manage chronic disease states. Cure rates from chronic degenerative disease aren't talked about.

So what really is a midlife crisis?

Somewhere around our forty's something begins to change in our bodies. Often passed off as the natural effects of aging that nothing could be done about, hormone deficiency coincides with midlife changes. Most commonly recognized in women, menopause brings on physiological changes that make some women feel crazy. Increased anxiety, hot flashes, insomnia, osteoporosis, loss of libido, and mental brain fog most commonly was treated with synthetic hormones and/or pharmaceutical medications. The rapid rise in the number of women on anti-depressants, sedatives, and sleeping pills is evidence that something is amiss. Until the WHI stopped in 2002, synthetic hormones helped with the symptoms. But it appears that the treatment had more risks than benefits. Still, despite the WHI findings, some women continue on dangerous synthetic HRT, as well as other pharmaceutical medications to treat the undesirable symptoms or menopause.

But back to the cause of a real midlife crisis. Somewhere around our forty's, our hormone systems begin declining. Recent studies confirms that this even happens in men. Known as androgen deficiency, men experience some of the same symptoms that women experience in menopause.

Why is hormone deficiency important?

Since chronic degenerative disorders tend to begin in our forty's is it a coincidence that this is the same time our hormones are declining? Probably not. It appears that our
hormone systems are a safety mechanism. A safety mechanism that helps our bodies maintain homeostasis, also known as
internal BALANCE.

In our twenty's, we rarely get the degenerative disorders that plague us in our forty's and beyond. That being said, Bio-identical hormones therapy is rapidly becoming recognized for its ability to help rectify this decline. What is important to remember is that each individual has a genetic makeup that means their hormone systems and metabolic enzymes are distinct to them. Some of today's laboratory testing enables us to test the results of hormone metabolic pathways, as well as genetic markers to determine if a person has an increase genetic risk for hormone sensitive cancers. Being able to customize BHRT is important to help keep an individuals system in homeostasis. Compounding pharmacies offer the ability to customize treatment regimens, rather than having limited dosing choices as is found with synthetic pharmaceuticals.
