Hormone Modulation of Premenstrual Migraines

Premenstrual or  menstrual migraines are related to the dropping levels of estrogen that occur just prior to a woman's period.  Often, those that suffer from menstrual related migraines experience a drop in estrogen in the 3-5 days prior to menstruation.  Synthetic estrogens, and oral contraceptive pills exacerbate this problem.  A solution is the placement of a small amount of estradiol hormone, in the form of a pellet, just below the skin. This pellet form of hormone is referred to as a "depot" form.  It releases a steady physiological mediated level of additional estradiol to help maintain a woman's level above her migraine trigger level. * So as premenstrual estrogen levels drop in the days proceeding her period, the estrogen levels don't plummet as dramatically, and migraines are averted.
